Murchison is a remote alpine town found in the Tasman District, South Island, New Zealand. It is a small town that encompasses the feel of a west coast town and is currently recognised as the white water capital of New Zealand. The cultural heritage in Murchison is very much entwined with the landscape and its bordering rivers. Originally, the rivers provided the people with gold panning, this encouraged people interacting with the water, living off the water and the water providing for them. With the rise of more and more dairy farming in the area, the water still an important part of the towns livelihood in this form of land use. The water is still providing for the residents.
