Dunedin: A great wee city with a great big waterfront - Rachel Walton

History: Outaku or Otago has been inhabited since 0 AD. Polynesians first arrived between 0 & 500 AD with a flow of immigrants up to 1500 AD. Transient villages followed resources such as moa and the land was fully forested up to 1000AD. However, Otepoti or Dunedin’s visible history only reflects the gold rush years from 1861 to 1864 and not the full story of this place and area. Green Island sealer’s camp was established in 1809 and a whaling station followed in the harbour in 1831. John Jones set up the first English farm village in Matanaka. Gold rush money built road and rail infrastructure as well as the commercial and residential heritage buildings we see today throughout the city.

Vision: To create a sustainable waterfront destination which invites local, national and international residents, visitors and business to stop, stay and play

Goals:

• To reconnect the city with the waterfront.
• Create a vibrant waterfront destination.
• To enable and contribute to Dunedin’s economic policy.
