Kaiapoi: Revitalising the River Town - Rebekah van Voorthuizen

KAIAPOI, a picturesque river town, is the gateway to the Waimakariri District. Just 17 km north of Christchurch, Kaiapoi lost large residential and commercial areas from the effects of the Canterbury earthquakes. The huge section of red-zoned land and its connection to the underutilised river provides an opportunity for revitalising this once lively, productive town. With a population of 11100 that is predicted to increase to 13200 by the year 2022, the Waimakariri District has sourced a new development that will improve the town’s condition and cater to the rowing population.

Vision: To improve the cultural and recreational connections between Waimakariri District Centres, and cater socially and economically to the diverse and growing populations - particularly being sensitive to the displacement of people and effects caused by the Canterbury Quakes. Enhance the community values and identity in recreation and open space whilst increasing urban development to encourage local spending and making these centres favourable places to live.
