Prospect + Refuge: There is a degree of ignorance in Tekapo's lack of quality open space and acceptance of its rich scientifical and cultural character. Appleton's theory seeks to find balance in spaces of refuse and prospect. Applying this theory to the town will seek to improve the quality of space and embrace the wider beauty of the surrounding landscape. 

Vision: Growing numbers in residents and a booming tourism industry puts the existing town centre’s ability to support projected growth into question. The project will aim to improve the town centre by integrating a balance between local and tourist facilities. Furthermore, establishing a stronger connection to the lakefront and the east and west sides of the town will develop a rich, cohesive recreational layer. Whilst improving these connections,
a degree of sensitivity and acknowledgement is taken towards the sites purpose within a starlight reserve putting the sky to use on the land.

Goals: 

• To connect the village centre to the east and west ends of the lake, creating a belt that
• gives the town spatial definition whilst creating a strong recreational loop.
• Develop a functional township and lakefront that benefits both locals and tourists.
• Enrich Tekapo’s identity through the collaboration of landscape and skyscape by simulating
• user experience. This will be achieved through cultural and scientific recognition of the sky.
