Riparian Recreational Park: Bexley Christchurch - Zoe Zhao

Bexley is on the upstream of the Avon River estuary in the eastern of Christchurch. It lies between New Brighton and Aranui and the Avon River flows through the site. Most of the land are red zone as residential before but abandoned due to the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 which caused serious flooding risks. Currently, the area is mostly still with challenges of tidal rise and flooding as low-lying. Furthermore, 30% of storm water in Christchurch is discharged into the Avon River which is under pressure. Therefore, the main issues of this area are the potential risks of flooding caused by earthquakes, stormwater pressure on Avon River and gradually increasing SLR.

Objective: Overall, the objective of this project is to create a Riparian Recreational Park through the integration of People, River, Ecology and Culture with adaptions of sea level rise (<5m) and flooding.
