The Middleton region is one of the most important industrial areas in western Christchurch. The Middleton industrial zone can be seen as an inland port zone which has serviced the whole of Christchurch for the last 100 years. However, several new plans made by the government have had a huge impact on the Middleton region in recent years.

Design Vision: The proposed design will focus on connectivity Middleton increasing between and the surrounding regions and enhancing the walking and cycling internal circulation in the Middleton area.

The inland port zone will be replaced with a residential zone with a great industrial atmosphere. The existing industrial zone will be repurposed to a high-tech zone for future use.

There are three kinds of pollution located on the study site. Therefore, there are three bioremediation zones to deal with the specific types of pollution. Mustard is used to purify contaminated land in the inland port zone; absorbent trees can be found beside the Southern Motorway for air pollution; and native forest and wetland deal with water pollution from the Heathcote River.
