Design Vision: The idea is to push the bottom-up approach temporary design intervention not only to generate a sense of place but also build social, economic and environmental values along the Orbiter bus route. The reason is that some place making attempts both from the city council and the local communities have failed to last long enough to create a new sense of place or to spark a catalytic effect to the nearby area. Therefore this project aims to design the city starting with the people (communities) using the most appropriate design approach (Tactical urbanism and/or Participatory urbanism) responding to the landscape character.

Goals: 

• To improve the quality of living (well-being and economy) in the suburbs around the orbiter bus route.
• To build social (socio-interaction) and environmental values (reduce congestion and pollution).
• To create a spontaneous city (use the element of surprise, temporal and playfulness).
• To reduce auto dependency (endorsing healthy lifestyle and increase spiritual experience on every bus trip).

Objectives: 

• To attract tourist (improve the economy of the city and suburbs) with the iconic orbiter bus route.
• To implement a bottom-up approach to create a sense of place which then catalyst into gradually improving its
environment within 400m (involve the community in the process).
• To increase biophysical health in Christchurch city (connect the potential green corridors across Christchurch).
