Former Ngāi Tahu head Tā Mark Solomon is delivering this year’s Lincoln University State of the Nation’s Environment address on 1 August.
The annual talk was introduced in 1999 on the initiative of the University’s Professor of Nature Conservation, Ian Spellerberg, who believed that if New Zealand was to maintain its clean, green image there needed to be an annual forum for assessing how the environment was doing.
Previous speakers have included then Environment Minister Nick Smith (2016) “ Improving Freshwater Management” and Prime Minister’s Science Advisor Sir Peter Gluckman, (2017) “The radical changes that humans have made to our environment”.
Tā Mark will be speaking on the Te Tai o Marokura Environmental Management Plan (Kaikoura Environmental Management Plan).
From Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Kurī iwi, he served as kaiwhakahaere of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the tribal council of Ngāi Tahu, for almost 18 years. He was first elected to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu as the local representative for Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura in 1995.
The Environmental Management Plan provides a framework for the Rūnanga to effectively apply tangata whenua values and polices to natural resource and environmental management in the takiwā, or area.
It provides policies, perspectives and guidelines on such things as specific activities, species, ecosystems, landscapes or places. These are intended to provide management guidance, according to Ngati Kuri values and knowledge in resolving significant environmental management issues and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources in the takiwā.
