Over the past week the Brandenburg Coppice, just west of the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, has been a hive of activity for local crafts people.
They have been participating in a series of wood-carving workshops run by Christchurch-based social enterprise, Rekindle.
The wood-carving workshops are part of Rekindle’s inaugural Necessary Traditions Festival, celebrating the relevance of resourceful craft, and following on from workshops held at the coppice earlier this year. Attendees spent the week working on projects from spoon carving, to kuska (old-style wooden cups) and greenwood chair-making.
Being part of this festival has been a great opportunity to inspire a new lease of life to the coppice.
Rekindle are now working alongside Lincoln University Ecology Professor Nicholas Dickinson to develop a new management plan for the Brandenburg Coppice.
The plan involves Rekindle running resourceful craft projects, including further greenwood-working opportunities for Lincoln University staff and students, as well as the local community.
