Indigenous vegetation loss in South Island since human settlement has been
a critical issue to deal with. Ashburton currently carries less than 2% indigenous land cover. Mainly was loss due to urban expansion and agricultural activity.

Ashburton geological position at the centre of Canterbury, connecting Timaru to Christchurch, transits to many key destination including Mt Hutt and Lake Tekapo. Ashburton’s ideal location as an influential town and catalytic change to Canterbury region.
