World Trade Organisation Director-General Mike Moore today (15.8) adds an Honorary Doctor of Commerce degree from Lincoln University to the awards received on his first official visit home since taking the Geneva-based WTO job. On Friday (11.8) he was presented with the New Zealand Order of Merit by the Governor-General.

The doctorate will be conferred on the former Prime Minister and Labour leader by Lincoln University's Chancellor the Hon. Margaret Austin, a former Cabinet Minister.

The honour recognises Mr Moore's outstanding contributions to New Zealand as a Minister in the areas of international trade, marketing, tourism and recreation, all important areas of teaching and research at Lincoln University and marked by professorial-level appointments.

It also recognises Mr Moore's contribution, as Minister of External Relations and Trade, to the development of policies for the international marketing of New Zealand's educational excellence – one of the revenue-earning success stories of the past decade both nationally and for Lincoln University. Lincoln was the country's first tertiary institution to recognise the value of international students and overseas recruitment and to start actively marketing abroad.

In his valedictory speech to the House of Representatives last year, Mr Moore said that Parliament had been his university, his training college. Chancellor Margaret Austin said she hoped he would be happy to expand that phrase now to include "Lincoln".
