7 July 2000 Another piano concert at Lincoln University

Music-lovers can enjoy a second piano recital in two weeks at Lincoln University with a concert by New Zealand-born Lindy Tennent-Brown this Thursday, 13 July. Lindy's recital follows that of pianist Dan Poynton last week.

Residents of the townships and communities around the Lincoln campus are welcome to join staff and students for this Lincoln University Music Society concert in Memorial Hall, starting at 12.40pm. Admission by gold coin.

Lindy Tennent-Brown, who made her debut as a piano soloist at the age of 16 playing with the Waikato Symphony Orchestra, will present sounds from the classical European repertoire, covering Bach, Haydn and Rachmaninov along with a sure-to-interest contribution from one of the 20th century's ‘individualist’ composers, Frank Martin (1890-1974).

From Bach, Lindy will present Toccata in E minor. From Haydn she will play Variations in F minor, and from Rachmaninov she has chosen Two Etudes – Tableaux: Op.33 No.3 in C minor "Grave" and Op.39 No.5 in E flat minor "Appassionato".

From the work of Frank Martin, Lindy will play Nos. 1-5 from Eight Preludes for Piano. Born in Geneva and a native French-speaker, Martin was an individualist who belonged to no ‘school’ or group. His contribution to 20th century music cannot be underestimated, yet his style is almost impossible to describe satisfactorily. He mediated between the two cultures in which he grew up – the Latin and the Germanic – and he was the first composer to achieve a successful synthesis between the French tradition of Debussy and Ravel and the 12-tone chromaticism of the Second Viennese school.

Lindy Tennent-Brown graduated Bachelor of Music with 1st class honours from Victoria University in 1996 and two years later she took up a postgraduate scholarship at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. That is where she is currently based and she hopes to complete her Professional Performance Diploma in solo piano next year.
