30 June 2000 NZ music focus of Lincoln recital

Distinctive New Zealand sounds come to Memorial Hall this Wednesday, 5 July, when Lincoln University Music Society presents a concert by pianist/composer Dan Poynton.

As always with the music society concerts, residents of the townships and communities around the University are welcome to attend. The recitals normally last about an hour.

Described as a "champion of New Zealand music", Poynton specialises in new music and his current concert series, entitled you hit him he cry out, has been acclaimed as outstanding by public and critics alike. He is one of New Zealand music's best kept secrets, said The Press in a review.

Born in Wellington, Dan Poynton studied composition at Victoria University under Jack Body and David Farquhar then majored in piano performance under Judith Clark. He later studied postgraduate piano in Melbourne.

Poynton's performing style is unique and the campus audience can expect a potpourri of humour, anecdotes, theatre and passionate playing, with an ever-present respect for the piano bordering on the reverential.

For his Lincoln University concert Poynton will play When Antonio Was There (Dan Poynton, 1998); The Nightmare Fantasy Rag (William Albright, 1970); Lullaby For Matthew (Gillian Whitehead, 1981); Lu's Blues (Gene Harris); and Moa (Dan Poynton, 1986).

The concert is in Memorial Hall, it starts at 12.40pm and admission is by gold coin donation – note this new policy.
