The opportunities for young cricketers provided by Lincoln University's Sports Scholarships are unparalleled in New Zealand.

The emphasis on combining the cricket programme with the students' educational goals, and the priority given to academic success, are key ingredients in producing future leaders for the sport.

Canterbury Cricket Association is delighted with the success of the inaugural programme, which began last year with an intake of 15 cricket scholars. Now we welcome a second intake of 14 scholars from across New Zealand.

Clearly there is a need to develop club, school and provincial coaches and administrators for the future. Canterbury Cricket provides on-going coaching tuition for the scholarship holders and all will have the opportunity to qualify as Level II coaches.

The scholarship programme with Lincoln University is an integral part of the association's Cricket Development Programme.

A number of our scholarship holders are employed as either coaches or development officers. We expect them to play a leading role in their clubs, working with the committee and assisting with coaching.

Despite sport in general facing problems in recruiting administrators, Canterbury Cricket is confident that its Lincoln graduates will remain committed to the game and provide future leadership.

Tony Murdoch, Chief Executive, Canterbury Cricket Association, Canterbury, New Zealand
