The Landscape No. 52 Winter 1992

    e-Journal
    Description

The Landscape No. 52 Winter 1992, The Kiwi Garden.

This issue of The Landscape focuses on the evolution of gardens and gardening in New Zealand, their sources and meaning. Two articles look at the influences on our suburban style of gardening identifying themes adopted from overseas and the way successive generations of New Zealand gardeners, and garden designers, have adapted these to the local situation. The Edmonds factory garden article strikes a positive note for the recognition, conservation and interpretation of one of our better known, thanks in part to that infamous cookbook, historical gardens. We should all be grateful to the Christchurch City Council and local residents for the protection of part of this important garden. This article provides a good connection to the village of Wakefield, a township which is am important part of our national heritage. The article calls for the introduction of a New Zealand system to locate, identify and list sites for a national landscape heritage record. Such systems operate in many countries overseas and are important in recognising and preserving our cultural identity, and in facilitating appropriate change. It is indeed time that we set about this important process. The Resource Management Act can be seen to give us a mandate, and ours is the profession to promote and undertake the evaluation process.
