Christchurch has a reputation of being the 'Garden City of New Zealand', largely due to the standard of horticulture maintained in the Botanic Gardens and in the parks.

Design Influences:

City Grid: recent (150 years), but with deep infrastructure
Biodiversity and its classification: Evolutionary origins ancient & modern botany (5-65 million years), endemic, unique, vulnerable, relatively invisible in the City.
Land and water: Timeless, recurrent
