What is Little River? Travelling by road, it is the first settlement entering the Banks Peninsula, a distinctive geologically and botanically important landform. It is a farming and country lifestyle community of about one thousand people based around a small village which serves as the main refreshment stop-off for the Christchurch-Akaroa highway. 

The future-proofing of Little River: A safe walkable, bikeable community retains and enhances that character whilst becoming the gateway to the Banks Peninsula with a DOC interpretation centre. A rail trail terminus building houses the DOC centre and a cafe providing safe refreshment; and parking area for travellers returning from Akaroa. Siting the terminus over the road from the village ensures the village continues to service its residents and visitors without being overwhelmed by a new tourist activity.
