Vision & Strategy

The Detail Plan focuses on the connection between the Avon-Otakaro River and the eel aquaculture production.

This area is a mid-point between Christchurch CBd and the sea, and a link between the north and south sides of the river. Main pedestrian and cycle axis of the boardwalk joins the urban area to the stopbank cycle and pedestrian path, and cuts a distinctive line between saline water environment on one side and fresh water orchard and native Manuka forest on the other.

Smoke house facilities for eel production are located overlooking the river, so that customers can enjoy the adjacent cafes, decks, and small retail, studios with views.

The Manuka forest is directly opposite the production facility so that transport of raw materials is kept to a minimum.

Vegetation is riparian on the Avon-Otakaro side of the river and in the eel aquaculture zone.

The tail of the eel is a potential platform for the public to enjoy demonstrations, education and feeding the eels.
