    About

    Sergeant S. J. Bowker left New Zealand with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the Main Body. After being in Egypt for some time he proceeded to Gallipoli, where he was killed in action on the 21st August, 1915. He was educated at the Timaru Boys' High School, and spent two years at Lincoln, taking a prominent part in football and swimming. After leaving Canterbury Agricultural College he was managing Mr. J. Withell's farm in the North Island until war was declared, when he enlisted. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death. Source: Canterbury Agricultural College Magazine, June 1917, p407.
