About
Very sincere regret was expressed when word came to hand that Sergeant Hubert Wiremu Steel had been killed in action in France. The departed soldier was born 23 years ago, and was educated at Ashburton High School. Previous to coming to Lincoln College he was farming for three years in the Ashburton district. While here he competed in a ploughing match, in which he gained 2nd prize. He was a keen footballer, and had the misfortune to break his leg early in the season of 1915. While still at College he enlisted in the 2nd South Canterbury Infantry Regiment in 1915, and was killed on September 16th, 1916.
