The Roll of Honour, Ellesmere Guardian
The many Canterbury friends and relatives of Mr William John McCormick, of Elstow, Te Aroha, will be grieved to read of his only son, Lieut. William Raymond McCormick, having fallen in action during the taking of Messines on June 7th. A young man of fine character and marked ability, he gave promise of a bright future, but having a high sense of duty he left home and dear ones to defend the lives of little children and the honour of women. Lieut. McCormick was not unknown in this district, having visited his relatives one holiday term when at Lincoln College. Lieut. McCormick was given a commission in the 6th Haurakis in May, 1915. He went into camp with 11 th Reinforcements, entered the front line in France on June 4th, 1916, was wounded on the Somme, returning to the lines at the beginning of the year and was serving with 1st Auckland Infantry Battalion.
