Person
Date of Death2 October 1916In MemoriamLieutenant Francis Clive Ramsden Upton, "Garri," was the son of Mr. T. E. Upton, Ashburton. "Garri" entered Lincoln College in 1910, and remained there till the middle of the year 1912, when he entered the employ of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, Christchurch. "Garri" enlisted as soon as volunteers were called for in Christchurch, and entered camp at Addington in August, 1914. He was appointed as a sergeant in the Canterbury Infantry, and left in this capacity with the main body of the N.Z. Expeditionary Force. He was at the Gallipoli landing, and was badly wounded about a week later. Shortly after being invalided to Egypt he was sent home to New Zealand with the first batch of wounded in the S.S. " Willochra." On arrival in New Zealand he was very lame, but within a few months was sufficiently recovered to enter camp again. After a little time there he left with the 9th Reinforcements. Shortly after his arrival in Egypt he received his commission, and a little later went to France, where he remained until he died so gloriously on October 2nd, in the "great push" on the Somme.SourceCanterbury Agricultural College Magazine, December 1916, pp.339-341.
