About
Mr John Stewart Rennie (1913-15) of Taupiri, Waikato.
Mr. Rennie was at the College from 1913 to 1915. He was always quiet and somewhat reserved, but was an exceedingly popular student, especially as his course continued into the second and third years and his fellow students came to appreciate his solidity and sterling character.
He was a member of the Second XV in 1913 and 1914, and played for the First XV in 1915. He was one of the lightest and most resolute five-eights ever to play for the College. He secured the Diploma at the end of his third 'year.
Mr. Rennie, after gaining his Diploma in 1915, immediately enlisted and served through the remainder of the War as a machine-gunner. He was a member of the body of troops which marched through to occupy Germany.
On his return from the War, he helped his father on their “Netherby” property at Taupiri, Waikato. In 1928, he took over the property from his father and farmed it in partnership with his brother Keith. The farm was developed into one of the best properties in the Orinui district.
As in his College days, Jack remained somewhat shy and reserved but was a very great favourite in the district. Mr. Rennie's father is also an Old Student and was the second winner of the Bledisloe Medal.
