J. A. Hayward(1958-60) BAgrSc, MAgrSc, PhD), the Bledsloe Medallist, 1994. He was appointed to the New Zealand Environmental Council in 1979, and continued his role as director with the merger of the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute with the Joint Centre for Environmental Studies to create the Centre for Resource Management. He was also a member of the Ross Dependency Research Committee’s Environmental Review Panel and visited Antarctica in 1991; Chairman of the New Zealand Hydrological Society; Council member of the New Zealand Association of Soil and Water Conservators and a member of the New Zealand Royal Society. He was awarded a 1990 Commemorative Medal for services to the environment. He was associated with 42 scientific papers. A number of these address the issues of sustainability and the values and beliefs that underpin attitudes to nature and their inclusion in decision-making.
