Increased tourism impact on small communities

    Expand/collapse
    Description

After Lyttelton Port was dramatically damaged following the Canterbury earthquakes, the bulk of visitors to the region were redirected to Akaroa. The impact of cruise ship tourism increasing abruptly from 14 cruise ship arrivals to 86 per season on the small harbour town has been significant – and both beneficial and detrimental.

    Project: Cruise tourism in Akaroa
Researchers: Dr Michael Shone, Dr Jude Wilson
Funders: Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, Christchurch City Council
