Former Lincoln University sports scholar, Lauren Bruce, set a New Zealand hammer record with a throw of 73.47m at the Athletics New Zealand Spring Series meet in Hastings on Sunday.
Lauren graduated last year. She attended the World Under-20 Athletic Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland while a student in 2016.
Then, in-between studying for a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in food science she hit the gym three times a week and threw the hammer for four to five days.
Now 23,she started in athletics at seven-years-old, originally doing high jump and hurdles.
She had a vision of attending the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and with the delay in the games due to Covid-19, might be hitting the form that could put her in line for an appearance next year.
