Young Farmer grand finalist and Lincoln University alumna, Georgie Lindsay, says some of the course content from her Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Hons) degree has been hugely helpful in the competition.
“Some questions and tasks relate directly to information we learnt in class and incredibly, some of that information has been retained.”
Lincoln University is one of the sponsors of FMG Young Farmer of the Year and Georgie is one of three alumni in the final, along with Matt McRae and Alan Harvey.
She studied at Lincoln from 2013-16, following in the footsteps of her mother and brother.
“I loved my time at Lincoln. It grew my interest in agriculture and I met awesome people.
“It has a real ‘community-feel’ – you have the ability to knock on any of your lecturers’ doors and be welcomed in for a chat.”
She said the reason she entered Young Farmers for the first time this year was to learn.
“Every time you do something that scares you, you learn something new.”
She must have learnt quickly, as she took out her regional Tasman Heat, the first woman from the region in 51 years to do so.
Georgie is a casual shepherd in North Canterbury.
“I have used my degree in aspects of post-Lincoln life: through consultancy work; to challenge on-farm ideas; to open opportunities for jobs, scholarships and more recently Young Farmers competitions.”
Lincoln highlights include her first year in the Halls ("great fun, so social") and Garden Party, as well as being part of the Lincoln University women’s rugby team in her last year ("amazing").
“The people were special too- great friends and hugely accommodating lecturers.”
The FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final will be held on 4-6 July 2019.
