Next week’s (16 October) 8th Annual Lincoln University Sport and Recreation Forum has a theme reflecting an increasing Governmental focus on improving the wellbeing of New Zealanders.
All the presentations are connected to wellbeing. Ellen Nicol, Master of Applied Science student at Lincoln will be presenting with Fran McEwen, Young People Strategy Lead at Sport New Zealand and the Founder of Shift Foundation on “Shifting the wellbeing of females: the lived experiences of young women in New Zealand".
Ellen said Shift Foundation delivers programmes aiming to improve the wellbeing of young women aged 12-20 in the Wellington region. “Just Shift It”, is one of the programme, and it fosters socialisation and engagement in activities among young women.
Her research explores the relationship between the programme and physical activity and wellbeing using statistical data and interviews with some of the participants to gain an understanding of their lived experiences.
Also presenting at the event will be:
- Associate Professor Kevin Moore, Lincoln University on the “Association between physical education class timing and cognitive function in children”
- Rebecca Gillett, 3rd year Bachelor of Sport and Recreation student on the “The importance of health and wellbeing for athlete pathway transitions”
- Shani Clark, 3rd year Bachelor of Sport and Recreation student on the “Shifting the wellbeing of females: the lived experiences of young women in New Zealand"
- Niamh Espiner, Master of Applied Science student on “Reconceptualising camping in New Zealand: An exploratory study of stakeholder perspectives on evolving camping mobilities in the Waitaki Valley”.
The forum started in 2012 as an opportunity for the sport and recreation sector to take stock and connect in the post-earthquake Canterbury environment. The forum has been refined over the last seven years as a chance for Lincoln University students to present current research to the sector and to foster networks in sport and recreation.
