Lincoln Future Leader Scholar, Zee Hammond-Walker, was part of a youth-focused Commonwealth Futures Workshop in the United Kingdom recently.
The ACU (association of Commonwealth Universities) and the British Council jointly organised a series of three-day workshops in India, South Africa and the UK, reflecting on the role of student leaders in creating cohesive societies.
The workshops provide a forum for students from across the Commonwealth to share their unique experiences and knowledge, and develop techniques for building tolerance, respect and understanding, and create an international cohort of student leaders ready to lead change in their own institutions and the wider community.
Outcomes from the series will include contributions to policy forums including Going Global and the CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) Youth Forum, Rwanda, in 2020.
Zee spent three days at the Cumberland Lodge in Windsor exploring how the CHOGM policy documents could be applied.
“The main themes that we explored were ICT and innovation, and the rule of law,” she said.
“Following this, we presented our idea to a prestigious panel that included the High Commissioner of Rwanda.”
During this workshop, she attended a reception at the Cyprus High Commission to celebrate the Commonwealth Scholars and to meet chancellors of other ACU universities.
“The workshop was a valuable learning experience and I gained a deeper insight into policy and how it can be effective when executed properly.”
Around 60 students attended the workshop.
